🏡 Painless Potty Training: Establishing a Successful Schedule and Routine

Potty training requires patience, consistency, and a strict schedule. The goal is to set your puppy up for success by maximizing the chances they eliminate outside, creating a positive, lifelong habit. Never punish accidents; simply clean and maintain the schedule.

1. The Immediate Schedule

 

Puppies typically need to eliminate:

• Immediately upon waking up.

• After drinking or eating.

• After playtime.

• Before bedtime.

A good rule of thumb is that puppies can hold their bladder for about one hour per month of age (a 3-month-old puppy can hold it for about 3 hours).

 

2. The Routine: Time to Go

 

• Leash Up: Always put your puppy on a leash before going outside. This prevents them from getting distracted and helps them focus on the task.

• The Spot: Take them to the exact same potty spot every single time.

• The Reward: The second they finish eliminating, use your happy, excited voice ("Good potty!") and immediately give a high-value treat and praise. The reward must be immediate to create the association.

 

3. Management and Containment

 

When you cannot actively supervise your puppy (if you are working or busy), they should be in a puppy-proofed area or a crate. Dogs are naturally reluctant to soil their sleeping space, making containment a crucial training tool.
