⛰️ Paw Protection: Essential Care for Rough Terrain and Harsh Weather

Hello Foot Soldiers and PetPaws Emporium Customers!

A dog’s paw pads are tough, but they are vulnerable to extreme temperatures and harsh surfaces. Hot pavement in summer, de-icing salt and ice in winter, and abrasive gravel can cause cracking, blistering, and severe pain. Dedicated paw care and protection are essential for year-round walking comfort.

1. The Temperature Check

  • Summer Rule: If the pavement is too hot for your bare hand to hold on for five seconds, it is too hot for your dog's paws. Walk early in the morning or late in the evening.

  • Winter Rule: De-icing salt (rock salt) is corrosive and highly irritating. Wash your dog's paws immediately after winter walks to remove the salt residue, which can also be toxic if licked off.

2. Daily Hydration and Protection

  • Paw Balm: Apply a protective, moisturizing paw balm before walks to create a barrier against salt, snow, or heat. Balms containing beeswax or natural oils help heal existing cracks and keep the pads supple.

  • Check Daily: After every walk, quickly check between your dog's toes and pads for small rocks, ice balls, or grass seeds, which can cause irritation and infection if left lodged there.

3. Boots (The Extreme Measure)

If you live in an area with extreme weather (deep snow, sharp ice, or scorching pavement), dog boots are the best defense. Ensure they fit snugly but comfortably around the ankle to prevent them from spinning or falling off during the walk.
